The Smart Project was designed as an alternative to school for students who are having difficulty coping at school.
Students work in small groups to improve their social, basic and life skills, increase their confidence and self esteem and focus on vocational skills through courses and extended work experience. Some students are also invited back to their schools to sit their GCSEs at Foundation level in maths and English.
Jobforce Wales have been running the Project for 6 years, in partnership with Carmarthenshire Youth Service. The Project is based at Inkerman Street in Llanelli and has space for 24 students each year. The Project is aimed predominantly at year 11 students.
The Smart Project had a suite of older PCs they wanted to make use of, but had an existing Service Agreeement with a local IT company, so technical support was limited to an ICT audit of existing equipment and recommendations.
An informative website that could be easily maintained was the main priority. The CVC Circuit Rider ICT Development Officer worked closely with the Smart Project Team to produce their new website launched on December 14th 2007, which they manage using Adobe Contribute.
The website gives news and information about the project, present students, a look at past students and how the project helped them. There is an students work area for uploading example coursework, photographs and project work.
